Book Editing with Inspiration Press
Novices and seasoned writers need the trained eye of a
professional editor.
Even if you have a family member, friend or an old English
professor willing to review your manuscript and give you
feedback, this falls short of having a skilled and experienced
professional editor at your service.
While having someone you know review your work is helpful,
these people typically do not have the skills, experience, time,
discipline, or objectivity required to produce a book you can
open with pride. Nor do they know the actual requirements for
today’s self-publishing world.
Let Inspiration Press review and edit your manuscript with the
expertise of a seasoned editor.
The following Levels of Editing will guide you to the
appropriate level you may need:
Levels of Book Editing
Basic Proofreading/Copyediting/Light Editing
Read and review entire manuscript two or three times.
Proofread to identify and correct typographical errors,
misspellings, punctuation and grammar errors, and
capitalization mistakes. Provide queries, suggest basic
structural changes and make recommendations to improve
readability using MS Word tracking feature.
Medium Edit (Includes everything covered in Light
Editing)
Plus: Check for run-on sentences, incomplete sentences,
incorrect word usage, and redundancies. Make suggestions
where re-phrasing would serve the author better.  May suggest
breaking up a paragraph (or even a chapter), refining tone,
correcting inconsistencies in narrative voice, and deleting fluff
and triteness. Check for consistency of names, titles, and
spelling. Check the (Table of) Contents for accuracy of page
numbers and sequence of illustrations (if applicable).
Heavy and Substantive Edit
Includes: Clarifying or reorganizing a manuscript for content
and structure. Incorporates most suggestions directly into the
text and highlights the revised material; inappropriate material
deleted. Highlight sections needing additional author input with
comments and questions for you to consider.
Assess manuscript to determine the need for additional
examples, quotations, or references. This service includes all
the tasks performed above but adds VERY in-depth analysis of
the storyline, character development, focus, and overall
structure; looks at the depth of how issues have been addressed
and offers solutions to improve readability.
In a work of fiction or non-fiction narrative, focus is on
character development and consistency, stylistic
methodologies, and storyline progression. Confusing and
awkward writing may be reworked. Sentences are analyzed for
structure and syntax. Long sentences may be enumerated or
separated. A Heavy Edit is best done while the work is in
progress. Once the flow is re-directed, the Light and Medium
edits are incorporated.
Writing/Rewriting
Includes: Creating a new manuscript or parts of a manuscript
based on content and research supplied by Author.
Developmental Edit
Includes: Researching the markets and delivering a report with
suggestions for manuscript development. This editing service is
most often started at the outline stage and progresses to
reviewing the developing work at all levels — paragraph,
chapter, and complete manuscript. The service begins with a
thorough review of the genre, target market, and specific topic.
The Editor works almost as a writing coach. At the early
stages, the Editor will review changes with the author, making
the initial updates directly in the manuscript. The author
updates the manuscript more fully, with frequent review by the
Editor.
Ghostwriter
Quite often authors have an idea, but find it difficult to produce
complete content. A ghostwriter can help an author fully
develop his ideas and then provide the "wordsmithing" needed
to get them to paper. The ghostwriter will take the outline,
combine it with extensive interview time, and produce a fully
developed first draft manuscript. The ghostwriter then provides
the first draft to the author for review. This service also
includes a Copyedit.
Due to the highly custom nature of this service, both cost and
timeline are developed on an individual basis.
